BulletStatement on Legislation Proposed by Senator Alexander. Secretary Spellings said that legislation proposed by Senator Lamar Alexander to expand flexibility options for states under No Child Left Behind is "a reasonable and responsible step forward."

BulletSpellings Speaks at the League Town Hall Meeting in New York. Secretary Spellings discussed the importance of character education and reauthorizing No Child Left Behind. She announced a new publication to help educators evaluate character education programs.

Bullet"Doing What Works" Site Launched to Help Educators. The new "Doing What Works" website helps locate teaching practices that have been found effective. The first topic: English language learners.

BulletAdolescent Readers Initiative. Secretary Spellings, First Book Senior Vice President Lynda Lancaster, Townsend Press author Ben Alirez, and Texas Commissioner of Education Robert Scott announced the national distribution of free books as part of the 2007 Adolescent Readers Initiative. The initiative will provide 520,000 free, new books to improve the literacy skills of struggling adolescent readers in low-income schools and communities.
