Mr. Heaton's Classroom Expectations

District Grading Guidelines

  1. Final class grade for students will be based on
    1. Homework/practice (which can count anywhere from 0-20% of final grade)
    1. Assessments (which can count anywhere from 80-100% of final grade)   Assessments may include, but not limited to, test, lab reports, projects or papers.

  1. The lowest grade a student can receive on an assessment is a 50%.  A 50% is still an F, but a student can bring up their avg. easier using a 50% instead of a lower grade.

  1. If a student fails to complete an assessment, then they can earn a zero.

  1. It is up to the teacher’s discretion if a student gets to retake an assessment.

  1. The student gets a grade for the homework/ practice that they turn in.  Teachers can give them a percentage grade or do a simple mark for the work that is turned in.
  1. If a student chooses not to turn in homework, then this is considered a “missing assignment” (which is figured in as a zero towards the grade average).
  7.  Homework / practice grades will be labeled as group of its             own on Infinite Campus.

  1. If a student is missing a grade, (due to illness or athletic events) school policy states “2 school days for every day they are absent”.  If they simply refuse to do the work then they can earn a zero.
  1. Incompletes on the Report Card will be taken care of by the Administration.

Homework Policy:

  • Homework is due at the beginning of the class period.
  • If you need help with homework, come in after school on the day it is assigned, or come in on the morning that it is due.  Please do not wait until you get to class to ask questions about homework that is due that day.
  • Home work that is not turned in at the beginning of class is late.
  • To receive up to 70% credit for late homework, you must hand it in by 4:00 on the day it is due.
  • Once in a while you will forget your homework, or you will have a legitimate excuse as to why it is not done.  If and when this occurs, please ask for special permission to extend your due date

Please head your papers as follows:

First and Last Name

Per. #

Date
  • Please leave white space between all problems like I did on this paper.
  • All work should be neat and crisp and clean.  How you present your work is, to a large extent, how you present yourself.  (If you choose not to be neat, you may end up redoing the assignment.)
  • Follow carefully the instructions for each assignment.

English Grade will be based on the following:
  •   20% - Homework
  •    80% - Tests/quizzes/essays
Daily Work (study guides, worksheets, etc.)
Compositions (paragraphs, essays)

Quizzes, tests
Book reports
Accelerated Reader (8th grade)

Nebr.State assessments
Good Citizenship (respect, responsibility, integrity, compassion)

(For more information on grading, see "district grading guidelines" above.)

Classroom Expectations

Arrive On Time.

This means be in your assigned seat before the bell rings. If you arrive late, please be discreet and non-disruptive, hand the teacher your pass if you have one, and quietly slip into your seat. If you're tardy, you'll be marked down as such and have to deal with the office. No blaming, no excuses.

Come prepared to Learn.

Bring all necessary materials: notebook, textbook, assignment, & personal reading book, daily planner (no locker passes will be given.)

Participate Actively in Your Learning.

Be positive; be alert; ask questions; contribute comments; encourage others; think about the material being studied; work hard! When afforded class time to work on assignments, use that time wisely; no sleeping in class. Keeping a positive attitude will help you get the most from your class!

Be Polite, Respectful, and Encouraging to Others.

Raise your hand to ask questions; Raise your hand to contribute comments; No sarcasm, bantering, put-downs, sexual comments, vulgarities, profanity, or other inappropriate language in the classroom. Use proper and culturally correct language. Be courteous to teachers and staff, other students, and visitors.

Enjoy and use moments of quiet time.

Sometimes after the daily instruction and activities, there will be time left in the period. This quiet time should be used for homework assignments, getting individual help, reading in a personal book, writing, or quiet reflection. Use these restful moments to refresh yourself mentally…not for visiting.

Locker Passes: given at teacher discretion

The four minutes between classes can be used to go to your locker. If you leave your assignment in your locker, you can bring it in right after class or after school for partial credit. If we are presenting student-created papers or projects, you'll probably be allowed to go to your locker.

Restroom Passes: Students may use the restroom during classtime if they:

     1)  Try to wait long enough to understand what the day's activities will                    before you leave the room.

     2) Fill out hall pass completely.

     3)  Exit and enter the classroom quietly.

    * If a student abuses restroom pass, i.e. going every day, or being gone from room too long, they will lose this privilege.
