Accelerated Reader

Students in the Broken Bow School District in grades 1 through 8 are actively involved in reading and checking their recall of the stories by taking reading practice quizzes using Accelerated Reader.  Research has shown that "the more you read, the better you read --and the more you enjoy it."  Second semester kindergartenand first grade students are encouraged to read, read, read. Students in grades two to eight begin the year taking a STAR test which accesses their independent reading level and assigns students a ZPD (zone of proximal development) which is a "comfort range"  within which students should be able to read and successfully recall facts from the book.  Second grade students are encouraged to read lots of books before moving to a higher ZPD. Older students are challenged to read harder books to improve their vocabulary and be exposed to more complex concepts of stories.  The over-all concept of Accelerated Reader is to make students life-long readers.

Big News for 2007-2008:   We have added STAR/STAR Early Lit to our Renaissance site.  Last year (2006-2007) the program was upgraded to the Enterprise Edition which is hosted on-line and gives students access to all the quizzes Accelerated Reader has constructed.  At last count the number of available quizzes is almost100,000 quizzes.  In addition, there are vocabulary tests and literacy tests available for use at the individual teacher's discretion.

Unless there is a glitch along the way, students will be able to take the STAR or STAR Early Lit test starting September 4th.  Accelerated Reader quizzes will also be available at that time.  Read away students and prove "there is reading after Harry Potter"!!!!
