HEROs is a school based one-to-one mentoring program that was developed through a group of community leaders known as the HEROs committee and Broken Bow Public Schools. The mission of the program is to create connections between high school students and elementary students that could not happen otherwise. HEROs empowers high school juniors and seniors as positive role models encouraging our area K-4th grade students to strive for greater success and to achieve their full potential.
The HEROs program was piloted in the Spring of 2015 with 8 mentors and mentees, since then the program has doubled in size locally and tripled in school involvement. The program currently has 19 mentor mentee relationships in Broken Bow and has even expanded a program to Arnold and Sargent. The impact the program has had on area youth has been tremendous, as teachers report growth in the elementary students on a monthly basis. While the ultimate goal is to see individual growth in the mentee, the one on one connection has left a distinguishable impact on each and every mentor, with each growing exponentially in their understanding of civic duty. We are hopeful to continue to grow the program next year to be a K-5th grade program as well as include more area schools in mentoring their students.
